i'm told even nancy pelosi's own staff doesn't know. the people i'm talking to, who i suspect do know, won't give me a hint. nancy pelosi has been the house democratic leader for ten years. four of which she was the speaker of the house. and by all accounts she leads her caucus with an iron fist. now she left a lot of her democratic colleagues pretty shocked two years ago when she decided to stay on as minority leader when she lost the gavel. now she really seems to be enjoying this intrigue about her future. listen to what she said yesterday. >> let's see, what time is it now? it's 2:00. on tuesday. i'll see you right here, 10:00 tomorrow morning. while i love you all very dearly i thought maybe i would talk to my own caucus before i shared that information with you. >> now that meeting with democratic colleagues is in fewer than two hours, 9:00 a.m. eastern, then she has a press conference an hour later. i've got to tell you, adding to the intrigue, she will appear with house democratic women. now could that mean she will say, well, s

nancy pelosi is expected to answer whether she's going to stay in her job. in a city where there aren't that many mysteries, this is a mystery. what are you hearing about what she may say? >> reporter: she was asked about this yesterday by reporters, so she's keeping us guessing. she did have a press conference yesterday with some of the new democrats in the house. she'll speak at 10:00 a.m. this morning. i think this sort of i forms speculation among democratic watchers on the hill that she's probably going to stay, but here's what she said yesterday when asked about it. >> see, what time is it now? it is 2:00. on tuesday i will see you right here at 10:00 tomorrow morning. while i love you all very dearly, i thought maybe i would talk to my up caucus before i shared that information with you. >> now she seemed kind of encouraged yesterday at that press conference because of some democratic gains in the house, obviously republicans are still in control there, but it's really also unclear who might succeed pelosi if she decides to forego the minority leaders

you can see how the market reacted just yesterday when you saw nancy pelosi out there. you saw john boehner out there saying we are hopeful we can get a deal done, and the market had a positive reaction to that, yet it lost that upside throughout the day. teetered back and forth between positive and negative territory, finally close the day out positive, so perhaps that suggests that maybe we are a little bit closer, but here's the thing, randi. they have got to get something done. >> yeah. >> they have got to solve this issue because if not the consequences are severe. >> you know, you listen to some people and they suggest that fears of falling off the cliff are overblown. i mean, what are the real consequences here? >> the real consequences are another recession. i can tell you every ceo that i'm talking to right now says i'm not making major decisions. i'm waiting. i'm standing by the sidelines. i can't hire a lot of people. i can't invest in a lot of infrastructure because i don't know what the landscape is going to be in the next 45 days. i don't know what the lan

this morning president obama and the four top congressional leaders john boehner, nancy pelosi, harry reid, mitch mcconnell all will begin talks at the white house. cnn's jill dougherty is following those developments for us this morning. she's in our washington, d.c. bureau. good morning, jill. >> hello, soledad. well, this is it. both sides are going to be there. they're looking at the tone. they're looking at the president, what kind of tone will he set? you have to say that they're coming in both sides with their essential positions intact. all, both sides are saying that there is some room for a compromise. so, the essential thing is how do you compromise? if you look at the positions, let's say, of the republicans, and it's most strongly, as i say, relayed by senator mitch mcconnell, he does not, and they do not, want any tax increases. so let's listen to him first. >> and let's be clear, an opening bid of $1.6 trillion of new taxes just isn't serious. it's more than simpson-bowles or any other bipartisan commission has called for. it's been unanimously rejected in the house and

senate majority leader harry reid and senator minority leader mitch mcconnell and nancy pelosi not surprising here. what's the expectation? >> well, you know, we'll see. publicly, suzanne, there has been a much more consillatory tone that we've seen since the election, whether it's from the president or the house speaker john boehner, but i can tell you in talking to sources privately on both sides of the aisle, they admit that it's all about positioning and posturing to make sure at the end of the day if we do go off the fiscal cliff that they're not blamed for it. they're the ones who looked reasonable, not unreasonable, and they're preparing for the other side to blame them for the opposite, if that makes sense. that's a lot of what you are saying in public. the reality is that neither side has a really clear machine date or clear vote and no one wants to look at the end of the day like they never gave compromise a chance. listen to republican bob corker, though, because there does seem to be a little bit of a crack on the republican side on whether or not it's okay to raise some taxes. >>
